Writing Sample — Duolingo English Test (2026 Guide + Practice)Writing Sample — Duolingo English Test (2026 လမ်းညွှန် + လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများ)
The Writing Sample is the DET’s extended writing task — and the one universities actually read. You get a 30-second preview of the topic, then 3–5 minutes of writing (capped at 5:00), aiming for at least ~100 words. It is UN SCORED — it does not touch your 10–160 score — but it is sent to institutions for manual review, where admissions officers assess your writing proficiency, grammar, and coherence. Treat it as a real writing sample, not a throwaway: this is your writing on display to the university you want to join.
⚠️ Unscored does NOT mean unimportant. The Writing Sample sits at the end of the test (~10-minute sample section with the Speaking Sample), after the scored adaptive test. Admissions officers do read it — a weak, careless sample can hurt an otherwise strong application. Write it like it counts, because to a human reader, it does.
⚠️ Don’t prepare for the wrong test. Many older guides still teach Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak — both were removed on July 1, 2025. If your practice material includes them, it’s outdated.

The Writing Sample is not auto-scored and does not affect your 10–160 score. It is sent to institutions, where admissions officers assess your real writing. Duolingo does not publish a detailed human-reading rubric, but strong samples show:

“I strongly agree that university education should be free for all students. Education is the most powerful tool for reducing inequality, and cost should never decide who gets it.
First, free university gives talented students from poor families a fair chance. In Myanmar, many bright students cannot afford tuition, so their potential is wasted. If education were free, these students could become doctors, engineers, and teachers who serve their communities.
Second, an educated population benefits the whole country. Countries with more graduates have stronger economies and better healthcare. A government’s investment in free education returns many times over through the taxes paid by well-employed graduates.
In conclusion, making university free is not just kind — it is smart. It unlocks talent, strengthens the nation, and builds a fairer society for everyone.”
Paragraph-by-paragraph teaching notes: P1 states the position in two crisp sentences — an admissions officer knows the answer immediately. P2 gives reason 1 (fairness) with a concrete Myanmar example — specific beats abstract. P3 gives reason 2 (national benefit) with a wider lens — the essay zooms out. P4 restates the position with a memorable final line (“not just kind — it is smart”). ~145 words in 5 minutes.

“The biggest challenge I have faced was learning to speak English confidently. For years I could read and write well, but whenever I had to speak, my mind went blank.
The problem was fear — fear of making mistakes in front of other people. I avoided every speaking opportunity, which only made the fear grow stronger.
I overcame it with a simple daily habit: I recorded myself speaking for five minutes every morning. At first it was painful to listen back, but within two months I could hear real improvement, and my confidence grew with it.
This experience taught me that courage is not the absence of fear but action despite it. Now, whenever I face something difficult, I break it into small daily steps — the same strategy that conquered my speaking fear.”
Paragraph-by-paragraph teaching notes: P1 names one specific challenge (not “life is hard” vagueness). P2 analyzes the cause — this depth is what separates a story from a real essay. P3 shows the solution as a specific action (5-minute recordings) with a timeline (two months) — concrete details convince. P4 extracts a universal lesson and applies it forward — the classic strong close. ~150 words.

1. “She go to university every day.” → choose the correction:“She go to university every day.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
Third-person singular (she/he/it) in the present simple needs -s/-es on the verb.
Present simple မှာ third-person singular (she/he/it) ဆို ကြိယာမှာ -s/-es ထည့်ရပါတယ်။
2. “I am agree with this idea.” → choose the correction:“I am agree with this idea.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Agree” is already a verb — it doesn’t need “am” in front of it.
“Agree” ကိုယ်တိုင်က ကြိယာဖြစ်နေပြီ — ရှေ့မှာ “am” မလိုပါ။
3. “There are many informations in the article.” → choose the correction:“There are many informations in the article.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Information” is uncountable — no -s, and it takes a singular verb.
“Information” က ရေတွက်လို့မရတဲ့နာမ် — -s မထည့်ရဘူး၊ singular verb နဲ့ သုံးရတယ်။
4. “He studied hardly for the exam.” → choose the correction:“He studied hardly for the exam.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Hardly” means “almost not” — the adverb for “with effort” is “hard”.
“Hardly” ဆိုတာ “နည်းနည်းလေးမှ” လို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရတယ် — “ကြိုးကြိုးစားစား” ဆိုတဲ့ ကြိယာဝိသေသနက “hard” ပါ။
5. “My teacher adviced me to practice daily.” → choose the correction:“My teacher adviced me to practice daily.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Advice” (noun) vs “advise” (verb) — here you need the verb form.

6. “Despite of the rain, we went out.” → choose the correction:“Despite of the rain, we went out.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Despite” never takes “of” — that’s “in spite of”.

7. “She has been living here since five years.” → choose the correction:“She has been living here since five years.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“Since” + a point in time (since 2020); “for” + a length of time (for five years).
“Since” + အချိန်အမှတ် (since 2020); “for” + ကြာချိန် (for five years)။
8. “The reason is because it is expensive.” → choose the correction:“The reason is because it is expensive.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
“The reason is because” doubles the reason — use “the reason is that”.
“The reason is because” ဆိုတာ အကြောင်းရင်းကို နှစ်ခါပြောသလို ဖြစ်တယ် — “the reason is that” သုံးပါ။
9. “I look forward to see you.” → choose the correction:“I look forward to see you.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:
💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
In “look forward to”, the “to” is a preposition — so a gerund (-ing) follows.
“look forward to” မှာ “to” က preposition — ဒါကြောင့် gerund (-ing) လိုက်ရတယ်။
10. “Neither of the answers are correct.” → choose the correction:“Neither of the answers are correct.” → အမှန်ပြင်ထားတာကို ရွေးပါ:

“Neither” က singular — “of” နောက် plural noun ပါလည်း singular verb နဲ့ သုံးရတယ်။

- Treating it as a throwaway. “It’s unscored, so two sentences is fine.” No — admissions officers read this. A careless sample tells them you’re a careless applicant.
- One giant block, no paragraphs. Five minutes of text with zero paragraph breaks looks unfinished and is hard to read. The 4-paragraph skeleton exists for exactly this.စာပိုဒ်မခွဲဘဲ တစ်ပိုင်းတည်း။ ၅ မိနစ်စာကို စာပိုဒ်မခွဲဘဲ ရေးတာက မပြီးသေးသလို ထင်ရပြီး ဖတ်ရခက်တယ်။ စာပိုဒ် ၄ ပုဒ် အရိုးစုက ဒီအတွက်ပဲ ရှိတာပါ။

Frequently Asked Questionsမေးလေ့ရှိတဲ့ မေးခွန်းများ
Is the Writing Sample scored?Writing Sample က အမှတ်ပေးတာလား?
No — it is unscored and does not affect your 10–160 score. But it is sent to institutions, where admissions officers manually review it — assessing your writing proficiency, grammar, and coherence as part of your application. Unscored is not unimportant.
How much time do I get for the Writing Sample?Writing Sample အတွက် အချိန်ဘယ်လောက်ရလဲ?
30-second preview of the topic, then 3–5 minutes of writing, capped at 5:00. Aim for at least ~100 words — there is no strict word limit, but short answers give readers little to judge.
Where does the Writing Sample appear in the test?စာမေးပွဲမှာ Writing Sample က ဘယ်နေရာမှာလဲ?
At the very end — the Writing Sample and Speaking Sample form the ~10-minute sample section after the ~45-minute scored adaptive test. Expect to be tired; the 30-second planning habit matters most when you’re exhausted.
If it’s unscored, can I write very little or skip the effort?အမှတ်မပေးဘူးဆို နည်းနည်းပဲရေးလို့ ရလား?
No. Universities receive your sample and admissions officers read it. A weak, two-sentence sample attached to your application actively hurts you — it is the only place they see your unassisted writing. Give it full effort.
What exactly are admissions officers looking for?Admissions officer တွေ အတိအကျ ဘာရှာနေလဲ?
Your real writing ability: clear, organized English with correct grammar and coherent paragraphs. They want proof you can handle university-level writing — a full, thoughtful ~100+ word essay with a clear position and examples is exactly that proof.
