Your complete roadmap to achieving a Band 9 in the IELTS Speaking test, from foundational concepts to advanced discussion strategies.

An Overview of the Speaking Test
The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner that lasts between 11 and 14 minutes. It is designed to be a realistic and reliable measure of your ability to communicate in English. The test is divided into three distinct parts, each with a different focus.
Part 1: The Interview
A 4-5 minute introduction and interview where the examiner asks general questions about familiar topics like your home, family, work, studies, and interests. The goal is to get you talking comfortably.
Part 2: The Long Turn
You are given a topic on a cue card and have one minute to prepare. You then speak for 1-2 minutes on the topic. This part tests your ability to speak at length, organize your ideas, and use appropriate language.
Part 3: The Discussion
A 4-5 minute discussion where the examiner asks more abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic. This part assesses your ability to express and justify opinions, analyze, and speculate on broader issues.
