Understanding the Listening Test
The IELTS Listening test is 30 minutes long (plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers) and consists of 40 questions divided into four parts. You will hear each recording only once. The test is designed to assess a wide range of listening skills, including understanding main ideas, specific factual information, and the opinions and attitudes of speakers.
Part 1
A conversation between two people in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel).
Part 2
A monologue set in an everyday context (e.g., a welcome talk or a speech about local facilities).
Part 3
A conversation between up to four people in an academic setting (e.g., students discussing a project).
Part 4
A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., a university lecture). There is no pause in this section.
