Fill in the Blanks — Duolingo English Test (2026 Guide + Practice)Fill in the Blanks — Duolingo English Test (2026 လမ်းညွှန် + လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများ)
Fill in the Blanks tests your vocabulary AND grammar together: you see a sentence with one unfinished word — the first letters are shown — and you have 20 seconds to type the complete word. The sentence context always gives you enough clues to find the answer. This task feeds your Reading subscore, and spelling must be exact. This lesson gives you the 20-second strategy plus three full practice sets with answers.
Fill in the Blanks
How It Works — Step by Stepဘယ်လိုဖြေရမလဲ — အဆင့်ဆင့်
- You see one sentence with one unfinished word. The beginning of the word is shown (for example expl___), and the rest is missing.မပြည့်စုံတဲ့စကားလုံးတစ်လုံးပါတဲ့ စာကြောင်းတစ်ကြောင်း တွေ့ရပါမယ်။ စကားလုံးအစကို ပြထားပေးပါတယ် (ဥပမာ expl___)၊ ကျန်တဲ့အပိုင်း ပျောက်နေတာပါ။
- Read the whole sentence first. The updated version of this task gives context clues — the meaning of the sentence tells you which word fits.စာကြောင်းတစ်ခုလုံးကို အရင်ဖတ်ပါ။ ဒီမေးခွန်းရဲ့ update ဗားရှင်းမှာ အကြောင်းအရာသဲလွန်စတွေ ပေးထားပါတယ် — စာကြောင်းရဲ့အဓိပ္ပာယ်က ဘယ်စကားလုံးနဲ့ ကိုက်ညီလဲ ပြောပြပါလိမ့်မယ်။
- Type the complete word — spelling must be exact. You have 20 seconds per sentence.စကားလုံးအပြည့်အစုံကို ရိုက်ထည့်ပါ — စာလုံးပေါင်း အတိအကျ မှန်ရပါမယ်။ တစ်ကြောင်းကို စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ရပါတယ်။
- There are 6–9 sentences in total. Unchanged by the July 2025 test update — this task feeds your Reading subscore.စုစုပေါင်း စာကြောင်း ၆–၉ ကြောင်း ပါဝင်ပါတယ်။ July 2025 test update မှာ မပြောင်းလဲခဲ့ပါ — ဒီမေးခွန်းက Reading subscore အတွက် အမှတ်ရပါတယ်။
⚠️ 20 seconds is longer than it feels — use it. Most students panic-type the first word that comes to mind. Instead: read the full sentence (5s), let grammar narrow the options (5s), then type carefully (10s). A rushed typo scores zero just like a wrong word.
How It’s Scored (Be Honest With Yourself)အမှတ်ဘယ်လိုပေးလဲ (ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို ရိုးရိုးသားသား)
Auto-scored by computer — the machine checks your typed word against the answer. What that means for your strategy:
ကွန်ပျူတာက အလိုအလျောက် အမှတ်ပေးပါတယ် — သင်ရိုက်တဲ့စကားလုံးကို အဖြေနဲ့ တိုက်စစ်တာပါ။ ဒါက သင့်နည်းဗျူဟာအတွက် ဘာအဓိပ္ပာယ်လဲဆိုတာ:
- Spelling must be exact. A brilliant guess with one wrong letter scores the same as a blank — zero. Always re-read what you typed.စာလုံးပေါင်း အတိအကျ မှန်ရပါမယ်။ စာလုံးတစ်လုံးမှားတဲ့ ဉာဏ်ကောင်းတဲ့ခန့်မှန်းချက်က အလွတ်ထားတာနဲ့ အတူတူ သုညမှတ်ပဲ ရပါတယ်။ ရိုက်ပြီးတိုင်း ပြန်ဖတ်ပါ။
- Grammar + vocabulary are tested together. The sentence context always disambiguates — there is exactly one word that fits both the meaning and the given letters.သဒ္ဒါ + စကားလုံးအသိပညာကို တစ်ပြိုင်နက် စစ်ပါတယ်။ စာကြောင်းအကြောင်းအရာက အမြဲရှင်းလင်းစေပါတယ် — အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရော ပေးထားတဲ့စာလုံးတွေရော နှစ်ခုလုံးနဲ့ ကိုက်ညီတဲ့ စကားလုံးက တစ်လုံးတည်း ရှိပါတယ်။
- Partial credit applies across the automated test — each correct word builds your Reading score.Partial credit ရပါတယ် — မှန်တဲ့စကားလုံးတိုင်းက သင့် Reading အမှတ်ကို တည်ဆောက်ပေးပါတယ်။
- Never leave a blank empty. Duolingo states you are NOT penalized more for a wrong answer than for skipping — a context-based guess always beats nothing.ဘယ်ကွက်လပ်ကိုမှ အလွတ်မထားပါနဲ့။ Duolingo ကိုယ်တိုင် မှားဖြေတာက ကျော်တာထက် အမှတ်ပိုမလျှော့လို့ ပြောထားပါတယ် — အကြောင်းအရာအခြေပြု ခန့်မှန်းချက်က ဘာမှမရေးတာထက် အမြဲသာပါတယ်။
Honest note: Duolingo does not publish full scoring rubric weights or per-item point values. Anyone selling an exact “points per blank” formula is guessing.
ရိုးသားစွာ ပြောရရင်: Duolingo က အမှတ်ပေးစံနှုန်း အလေးချိန်အတိအကျ ဒါမှမဟုတ် တစ်ကွက်ချင်းအမှတ်ကို ထုတ်ပြန်မထားပါ။ “တစ်ကွက်ကို ဘယ်နှစ်မှတ်” လို့ အတိအကျရောင်းတဲ့သူမှန်သမျှ ခန့်မှန်းနေတာပါ။
Strategy — 6 Tactics for 20 Secondsနည်းဗျူဟာ — စက္ကန့် ၂၀ အတွက် နည်း ၆ ခု
- Read the whole sentence before touching the blank. The word after the blank often decides everything: “She was so t___ after the journey” — “after the journey” tells you the word is tired.ကွက်လပ်ကို မထိခင် စာကြောင်းတစ်ခုလုံး ဖတ်ပါ။ ကွက်လပ်နောက်က စကားလုံးက အရာအားလုံး ဆုံးဖြတ်ပေးတတ်ပါတယ် — “She was so t___ after the journey” ဆိုရင် “after the journey” က အဖြေ tired ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ပြောပြနေတာပါ။
- Let grammar narrow it down. “a/an/the ___” needs a noun; “to ___” needs a verb; “very ___” needs an adjective or adverb. Grammar cuts 1,000 possible words to 3.
- Trust the given letters — they’re your anchor. The stem is always correct. Your word MUST start with those letters, which eliminates every synonym that doesn’t.
- Think in collocations (word partnerships). Words travel in pairs: make a ___ → decision; take ___ → place; pay ___ → attention. If the stem is dec___ and you see “make a”, the answer is decision.Collocation (စကားလုံးအတွဲ) နဲ့ တွေးပါ။ စကားလုံးတွေက အတွဲလိုက် သွားလာတတ်ပါတယ် — make a ___ → decision၊ take ___ → place၊ pay ___ → attention။ အစက dec___ ဖြစ်ပြီး “make a” လို့ တွေ့ရင် အဖြေက decision ပါ။
- Watch the double-letter trap. The #1 spelling killer: occured vs occurred, neccessary vs necessary. When you type, ask: “does this word double a letter?”နှစ်ထပ်စာလုံး ထောင်ချောက်ကို သတိထားပါ။ စာလုံးပေါင်း အသတ်ခံရဆုံး အကြောင်းရင်း: occured vs occurred၊ neccessary vs necessary။ ရိုက်တဲ့အခါ “ဒီစကားလုံးမှာ စာလုံးနှစ်ထပ်ပါလား?” လို့ မေးပါ။
- Guess from context, never leave it blank. With 5 seconds left, type your best context-based guess and re-check the spelling. A guess can score; a blank cannot.

🚫 Common Mistakes of Myanmar Learners🚫 မြန်မာကျောင်းသားတွေ အမှားများတဲ့ အချက်များ
- Typing before reading the full sentence. The classic error: seeing t___ and typing “the” before noticing “after the long journey” — the answer was tired. Always read to the period first.စာကြောင်းအပြည့်မဖတ်ဘဲ ရိုက်ထည့်တာ။ အဖြစ်များဆုံးအမှား: t___ ကို တွေ့တာနဲ့ “after the long journey” ကို မသတိထားဘဲ “the” လို့ ရိုက်တာ — အဖြေက tired ဖြစ်နေတယ်။ ပုဒ်မဆုံးထိ အမြဲအရင်ဖတ်ပါ။
- Wrong word form. Typing “decide” where the sentence needs “decided”, or “excite” instead of “excited”. The stem fits many forms — grammar picks the right one.စကားလုံးပုံစံမှားတာ။ “decided” လိုတဲ့နေရာမှာ “decide” လို့ရိုက်တာ၊ “excited” အစား “excite” လို့ရေးတာ။ အစက ပုံစံအမျိုးမျိုးနဲ့ ကိုက်နိုင်တယ် — သဒ္ဒါက အမှန်ကို ရွေးပေးပါတယ်။
- The double-letter trap. occured, neccessary, succesful — Myanmar learners often drop the doubled letter. When in doubt, check: does this word double a consonant?နှစ်ထပ်စာလုံး ထောင်ချောက်။ occured, neccessary, succesful — မြန်မာကျောင်းသားတွေ နှစ်ထပ်ဗျည်းကို ခဏခဏ ချန်ထားတတ်ပါတယ်။ မသေချာရင် စစ်ပါ — ဒီစကားလုံးမှာ ဗျည်းနှစ်ထပ်ပါလား?
- Ignoring the given letters. Typing a perfect synonym that doesn’t start with the stem — e.g. “unhappy” for s___ (“sad”). A beautiful wrong word still scores zero.ပေးထားတဲ့စာလုံးတွေကို လျစ်လျူရှုတာ။ အစနဲ့ မကိုက်တဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်တူ အကောင်းစားစကားလုံး ရိုက်တာ — ဥပမာ s___ (“sad”) အတွက် “unhappy”။ လှပတဲ့အမှားစကားလုံးလည်း သုညမှတ်ပဲ ရပါတယ်။
- Leaving blanks empty “to come back later”. There is no later — 20 seconds per sentence, then it’s gone. Type your best guess before time runs out.“နောက်မှ ပြန်လာမယ်” ဆိုပြီး ကွက်လပ်အလွတ်ထားတာ။ “နောက်မှ” ဆိုတာ မရှိပါ — တစ်ကြောင်းကို စက္ကန့် ၂၀၊ ပြီးရင် ပျောက်သွားပြီ။ အချိန်မကုန်ခင် အကောင်းဆုံး ခန့်မှန်းချက်ကို ရိုက်ထည့်ပါ။
Frequently Asked Questionsမေးလေ့ရှိတဲ့ မေးခွန်းများ
How many Fill in the Blanks items are on the test?စာမေးပွဲမှာ Fill in the Blanks ဘယ်နှစ်ခုလဲ?
6–9 sentences, 20 seconds each — about 2–3 minutes of test time in total.
စာကြောင်း ၆–၉ ကြောင်း၊ တစ်ကြောင်းကို စက္ကန့် ၂၀ — စုစုပေါင်း စာမေးပွဲအချိန် ၂–၃ မိနစ်ခန့်။
Does spelling really have to be perfect?စာလုံးပေါင်း တကယ်ပဲ အတိအကျမှန်ရမှာလား?
Yes — the computer compares your typed word with the answer, so one wrong letter means zero for that item. Always re-read what you typed before the 20 seconds end.
ဟုတ်ပါတယ် — ကွန်ပျူတာက သင်ရိုက်တဲ့စကားလုံးကို အဖြေနဲ့ တိုက်စစ်တာမို့ စာလုံးတစ်လုံးမှားရင် အဲဒီအပုဒ် သုညမှတ်ပါ။ စက္ကန့် ၂၀ မကုန်ခင် ရိုက်ထားတာကို အမြဲပြန်ဖတ်ပါ။
What if two different words seem to fit?စကားလုံးနှစ်လုံး ကိုက်ညီသလိုထင်ရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမလဲ?
On the real test this doesn’t happen — the sentence context always disambiguates, and the given letters eliminate the alternatives. If two words come to mind, pick the one that starts with the given stem.
Should I guess if I’m not sure?မသေချာရင် ခန့်မှန်းရမှာလား?
Always. Duolingo states you are not penalized more for a wrong answer than for skipping, and a context-based guess is right surprisingly often. Never submit a blank.
အမြဲခန့်မှန်းပါ။ Duolingo ကိုယ်တိုင် မှားဖြေတာက ကျော်တာထက် အမှတ်ပိုမလျှော့လို့ ပြောထားပြီး အကြောင်းအရာအခြေပြု ခန့်မှန်းချက်က အံ့သြစရာကောင်းလောက် မှန်တတ်ပါတယ်။ ကွက်လပ်အလွတ် ဘယ်တော့မှ မတင်ပါနဲ့။
Which subscore does this task feed?ဒီမေးခွန်းက ဘယ် subscore အတွက်လဲ?
The Reading subscore — it tests vocabulary and grammar together through written sentences, so it sits firmly in the reading family.
Reading subscore အတွက်ပါ — စာကြောင်းတွေကနေ စကားလုံးအသိပညာနဲ့ သဒ္ဒါကို တစ်ပြိုင်နက်စစ်တာမို့ reading မိသားစုထဲမှာ ခိုင်ခိုင်မာမာ ရှိပါတယ်။
