Read, Then Speak — Duolingo English Test (2026 Guide + Practice)Read, Then Speak — Duolingo English Test (2026 လမ်းညွှန် + လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများ)
Read, Then Speak is the Duolingo English Test’s opinion task: you read a written topic, get 20 seconds to plan, then speak for up to 90 seconds. And yes — it is still current in 2026; many guides wrongly drop it. It feeds your Speaking subscore, and the 20-second planning window is where strong answers are won or lost. This lesson gives you the answer formula plus six practice prompts with model plans.
How It Works — Step by Stepဘယ်လိုဖြေရမလဲ — အဆင့်ဆင့်
- A written prompt appears. You read a topic or question on screen — an opinion, an experience, a hypothetical situation.ရေးထားတဲ့မေးခွန်း ပေါ်လာပါတယ်။ screen ပေါ်မှာ အကြောင်းအရာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် မေးခွန်းကို ဖတ်ရပါတယ် — အမြင်၊ အတွေ့အကြုံ၊ စိတ်ကူးယဉ်အခြေအနေ တစ်ခုခု။
- 20 seconds to read and plan. Recording has not started. Read the prompt twice if needed, then lock in 3 keywords — not full sentences.ဖတ်ပြီး စီစဉ်ဖို့ စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ရပါတယ်။ Recording မစသေးပါ။ လိုအပ်ရင် မေးခွန်းကို နှစ်ကြိမ်ဖတ်ပြီး keyword ၃ ခု ရွေးထားပါ — ဝါကျအပြည့်အစုံ မဟုတ်ပါ။
- Recording starts automatically. No button to press — the microphone goes live when the preview ends.Recording က အလိုအလျောက် စပါတယ်။ နှိပ်ရမယ့်ခလုတ် မရှိပါ — ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်ကုန်တာနဲ့ microphone ပွင့်ပါပြီ။
- Speak for up to 90 seconds. Develop your answer aloud: direct answer → reason → example → close.၉၀ စက္ကန့်အထိ ပြောပါ။ အဖြေကို အသံနဲ့ ချဲ့ထွင်ပြောပါ: တိုက်ရိုက်အဖြေ → အကြောင်းပြချက် → ဥပမာ → အပိတ်။
- One item on the test. Read, Then Speak appears once per test and feeds your Speaking subscore.စာမေးပွဲမှာ တစ်ပုဒ်ပါ။ Read, Then Speak က တစ်ကြိမ်ပေါ်ပြီး Speaking subscore ကို သက်ရောက်ပါတယ်။
⚠️ Still on the test in 2026 — don’t skip it. After the July 2025 update removed Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak, many guides wrongly dropped Read, Then Speak too. It is still current. If your prep plan ignores it, the plan is incomplete.
How It’s Scored (What the AI Listens For)အမှတ်ဘယ်လိုပေးလဲ (AI က ဘာတွေနားထောင်လဲ)
Duolingo does not publish its full scoring rubric, but its scoring guide confirms the automated system assesses your speaking proficiency across several dimensions. For this task, strong responses show:
- Coherence of a developed answer — ideas in logical order (answer → reason → example → close), not a pile of random thoughts.ချဲ့ထွင်ထားတဲ့အဖြေရဲ့ ဆက်စပ်မှု — အတွေးအခေါ်တွေ ကျိုးကြောင်းဆီလျော်တဲ့ အစဉ် (အဖြေ → အကြောင်းပြချက် → ဥပမာ → အပိတ်)၊ ဟိုတွေးဒီတွေး စုပုံထားတာမျိုး မဟုတ်တာ။
- Relevance — actually answering the prompt asked. The #1 score-killer is a fluent answer to the wrong question.သက်ဆိုင်မှု — မေးတဲ့မေးခွန်းကို တကယ်ဖြေတာ။ အမှတ်အပျက်စေဆုံး အမှားက ချောချောမွေ့မွေ့နဲ့ မှားတဲ့မေးခွန်းကို ဖြေမိတာပါ။
- Vocabulary range — precise, varied word choice for opinions and reasons (not “good / bad / important” on repeat).စကားလုံးကြွယ်ဝမှု — အမြင်နဲ့အကြောင်းပြချက်တွေအတွက် တိကျစုံလင်တဲ့ ရွေးချယ်မှု (“good / bad / important” ချည်း ထပ်ခါထပ်ခါ မဟုတ်တာ)။
- Grammar — correct, varied sentences; clean tenses when you shift between past experience and future plans.သဒ္ဒါ — မှန်ကန်စုံလင်တဲ့ ဝါကျတွေ။ အတိတ်အတွေ့အကြုံနဲ့ အနာဂတ်အစီအစဉ်ကြား ကူးပြောင်းတဲ့အခါ tense သန့်ရှင်းတာ။
- Fluency & pronunciation — steady pace, clear articulation. Your accent does not lower your score — unclear speech does.ချောမွေ့မှုနဲ့ အသံထွက် — တည်ငြိမ်တဲ့အမြန်နှုန်း၊ ရှင်းလင်းတဲ့အသံထွက်။ accent ရှိတာက အမှတ်မလျှော့ပါ — မပီမသပြောတာကသာ အမှတ်လျှော့စေတာ။
Honest note: no prep site (including this one) knows the exact algorithm weights. Anyone promising a “guaranteed scoring formula” is guessing. What works is genuinely better speaking — which is what these drills build.
Strategy — 6 Tactics That Workနည်းဗျူဟာ — ထိရောက်တဲ့ နည်း ၆ ခု
- Plan 3 keywords, not sentences. In 20 seconds you cannot write a script — and shouldn’t. Three keywords (e.g. “motivation / study group / scores up”) are enough to steer 90 seconds of speech.ဝါကျတွေ မဟုတ်ဘဲ keyword ၃ ခု စီစဉ်ပါ။ စက္ကန့် ၂၀ မှာ စာသားအပြည့်ရေးဖို့ မဖြစ်နိုင်သလို မရေးသင့်ပါ။ Keyword ၃ ခု (ဥပမာ “motivation / study group / scores up”) က ၉၀ စက္ကန့်ပြောဖို့ လုံလောက်ပါတယ်။
- Use the answer formula: direct answer → reason → example → close. Every strong 90-second answer follows this spine.အဖြေဖော်မြူလာကို သုံးပါ: တိုက်ရိုက်အဖြေ → အကြောင်းပြချက် → ဥပမာ → အပိတ်။ ၉၀ စက္ကန့်အဖြေကောင်းတိုင်း ဒီအရိုးစုအတိုင်း လိုက်ပါတယ်။
- Answer first, explain after. Your first sentence should contain your position: “I believe…”, “I prefer…”, “I would…”. Don’t circle for 20 seconds before landing.အရင်ဖြေ၊ ပြီးမှ ရှင်းပြပါ။ ပထမဝါကျမှာ သင့်ရပ်တည်ချက် ပါရမယ်: “I believe…”, “I prefer…”, “I would…”။ စက္ကန့် ၂၀ လှည့်ပတ်ပြောပြီးမှ အဖြေရောက်တာမျိုး မလုပ်ပါနဲ့။
- One real example beats three vague claims. “Last year my study group met twice a week and my scores improved” outscores “It is good. It is important. It is useful.”တကယ့်ဥပမာတစ်ခုက မရေရာတဲ့အဆိုပြုချက် သုံးခုထက် သာတယ်။ “Last year my study group met twice a week and my scores improved” ဆိုတာက “It is good. It is important. It is useful.” ထက် အမှတ်ပိုရပါတယ်။
- Signpost your turns. “First…”, “For example…”, “So…” — these tiny words make your structure audible to the AI and keep you from rambling.အလှည့်အပြောင်းကို လမ်းညွှန်စကားလုံးနဲ့ ပြပါ။ “First…”, “For example…”, “So…” — ဒီစကားလုံးသေးသေးလေးတွေက သင့်အစီအစဉ်ကို AI ကြားနိုင်စေပြီး လျှောက်ပြောတာကို တားပေးတယ်။
- Close with a final thought. Never trail off with “So… yeah…”. End on a line that answers the question: “So for me, studying together — with structure — beats studying alone.”နောက်ဆုံးအတွေးနဲ့ အဆုံးသတ်ပါ။ “So… yeah…” ဆိုပြီး မှုန်ဝါးအဆုံးမသတ်ပါနဲ့။ မေးခွန်းကို ဖြေတဲ့ စာကြောင်းနဲ့ အဆုံးသတ်ပါ: “So for me, studying together — with structure — beats studying alone.”

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်
Key numbers: 20-second preview, up to 90 seconds speaking, 1 item, 3 keywords. Formula order: direct answer → reason → example → close.
အဓိကနံပါတ်များ: ကြိုကြည့်ချိန် စက္ကန့် ၂၀၊ ပြောချိန် ၉၀ စက္ကန့်အထိ၊ ၁ ပုဒ်၊ keyword ၃ ခု။ ဖော်မြူလာအစဉ်: တိုက်ရိုက်အဖြေ → အကြောင်းပြချက် → ဥပမာ → အပိတ်။
Practice Set — 6 Prompts, 6 Topicsလေ့ကျင့်ခန်း — မေးခွန်း ၆ ခု၊ အကြောင်းအရာ ၆ မျိုး
For each prompt: run the 20-second planning timer below and write down 3 keywords (on paper — this is practice, not the test). Then speak for 90 seconds with the main timer. Open the model plan after you finish; two prompts also have full model answers with teaching notes.
Prompt 1 (opinion) — “Some people think technology has made our lives better. Others think it has made life worse. What is your opinion?”မေးခွန်း ၁ (အမြင်) — “Some people think technology has made our lives better. Others think it has made life worse. What is your opinion?”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: better overall / connection (video-call, online study) / pandemic classes example → close: tool, depends on use
Three keywords steer the whole answer: position, reason cluster, and the example you’ll expand. Notice the plan includes the closing idea — decide your ending before you start.
Keyword ၃ ခုက အဖြေတစ်ခုလုံးကို ဦးဆောင်ပေးတယ်: ရပ်တည်ချက်၊ အကြောင်းပြချက်အစု၊ ချဲ့ပြောမယ့်ဥပမာ။ အစီအစဉ်မှာ အပိတ်အတွေးပါ ပါတာ သတိထားမိလား — မစခင် အဆုံးကို ဆုံးဖြတ်ထားပါ။
Full model answer + teaching notes (open after you speak)Model အဖြေအပြည့် + သင်ကြားရေးမှတ်စု (ပြောပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)
“I believe technology has made our lives better overall. The main reason is connection — I can video-call my family from anywhere, study with online courses, and work with people in other countries. For example, during the pandemic, my English classes moved online, and honestly I learned more because I could rewatch lessons anytime. Of course, there are downsides like distraction and less face-to-face time. But on balance, the benefits are much bigger. Technology is a tool — it depends on how we use it. So my answer is yes: life is better with it, as long as we stay in control.”
Teaching notes: the formula is visible — answer (“I believe…”) → reason (connection) → example (pandemic classes) → close (“as long as we stay in control”). The honest concession (“of course, there are downsides”) adds maturity. The personal example with a concrete detail (rewatch lessons) beats any generic claim. ~85 seconds at natural pace.
Prompt 2 (experience) — “Describe a difficult challenge you faced and how you overcame it.”မေးခွန်း ၂ (အတွေ့အကြုံ) — “Describe a difficult challenge you faced and how you overcame it.”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: failed mock exam / daily timetable / passed with confidence → close: failure taught planning
Experience prompts need past tenses — your keywords should remind you of the story arc: problem → action → result. Keep the close as a lesson learned.
အတွေ့အကြုံမေးခွန်းတွေက past tense လိုတယ် — keyword တွေက ဇာတ်လမ်းအစဉ် (ပြဿနာ → လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် → ရလဒ်) ကို သတိရစေရမယ်။ အပိတ်ကို သင်ခန်းစာအဖြစ် ထားပါ။
Prompt 3 (hypothetical) — “If you could travel to any country in the world, where would you go and why?”မေးခွန်း ၃ (စိတ်ကူးယဉ်) — “If you could travel to any country in the world, where would you go and why?”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: Japan / temples + politeness culture / cherry blossom season → close: bring ideas home
Hypothetical prompts need conditionals (“I would…”, “If I went…”). Pick ONE country and go deep — listing five countries is the classic way to waste 90 seconds.
စိတ်ကူးယဉ်မေးခွန်းတွေက conditional (“I would…”, “If I went…”) လိုတယ်။ နိုင်ငံတစ်ခုတည်း ရွေးပြီး နက်နက်နဲနဲ ပြောပါ — နိုင်ငံ ၅ ခု စာရင်းလုပ်ပြတာက ၉၀ စက္ကန့်ကို ဖြုန်းတဲ့ အဖြစ်အများဆုံးနည်းပါ။
Prompt 4 (preference) — “Do you prefer studying alone or with other people? Explain your choice.”မေးခွန်း ၄ (နှစ်သက်မှု) — “Do you prefer studying alone or with other people? Explain your choice.”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: with people / motivation + focus / study group, scores up → close: together with structure
Preference prompts want a clear choice in sentence one — “it depends” is fine only if you still pick a side by sentence three.
နှစ်သက်မှုမေးခွန်းတွေက ပထမဝါကျမှာ ရွေးချယ်မှုရှင်းရှင်း လိုတယ် — “it depends” က သုံးဝါကျမြောက်မှာ ဘက်ရွေးပြီးသားဖြစ်မှ ရတယ်။
Full model answer + teaching notes (open after you speak)Model အဖြေအပြည့် + သင်ကြားရေးမှတ်စု (ပြောပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)
“I definitely prefer studying with other people. The main reason is motivation — when I study alone, I get distracted by my phone within twenty minutes, but with friends I stay focused for hours. For example, last year my friends and I formed a small English study group. We met twice a week, quizzed each other on vocabulary, and corrected each other’s speaking. My test scores improved noticeably in just two months. Of course, group study can turn into chatting if there’s no plan, so we always set a clear goal for each session. So for me, studying together — with structure — beats studying alone.”
Teaching notes: position in the first five words (“I definitely prefer…”). The honest weakness (phone distraction) makes the answer believable. Specific numbers (twice a week, two months) make the example concrete. The closing line restates the answer with a nuance (“with structure”) — that nuance is what lifts it above average. ~85 seconds at natural pace.
Prompt 5 (advice) — “What advice would you give to a friend who wants to improve their English?”မေးခွန်း ၅ (အကြံပေးခြင်း) — “What advice would you give to a friend who wants to improve their English?”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: daily 15 minutes / input + output (listen + speak) / don’t fear mistakes → close: consistency beats intensity
Advice prompts sound best with imperatives and second person (“Start with…”, “Don’t…”). Give advice you actually follow — borrowed tips sound hollow.
အကြံပေးမေးခွန်းတွေက imperative နဲ့ second person (“Start with…”, “Don’t…”) နဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံးကြားရတယ်။ ကိုယ်တိုင်လိုက်နာတဲ့အကြံ ပေးပါ — ငှားလာတဲ့အကြံတွေက အပေါ်ယံဆန်တယ်။
Prompt 6 (future) — “Where do you see yourself in five years?”မေးခွန်း ၆ (အနာဂတ်) — “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
Model 3-keyword planModel keyword ၃ ခု အစီအစဉ်
Keywords: teacher / master’s abroad / help Myanmar students → close: give back
Future prompts need future forms (“I will…”, “I hope to…”, “I’m planning to…”). Connect the future to the present — what you’re doing NOW to get there makes the vision believable.
အနာဂတ်မေးခွန်းတွေက future ပုံစံ (“I will…”, “I hope to…”, “I’m planning to…”) လိုတယ်။ အနာဂတ်ကို ပစ္စုပ္ပန်နဲ့ ဆက်စပ်ပါ — အဲဒီကိုရောက်ဖို့ အခု ဘာလုပ်နေလဲဆိုတာ ထည့်ရင် အမြင် ယုံကြည်ရတယ်။

- Writing full sentences in the 20 seconds. Time runs out mid-sentence and panic follows. Three keywords on paper (in practice) or in your head (on test day) — never sentences.
- Answering a different question. The prompt asks for your opinion; you describe your daily routine. Read the prompt twice in the preview — one keyword from it must appear in your first sentence.တခြားမေးခွန်းကို ဖြေမိတာ။ မေးခွန်းက အမြင်တောင်းတယ်၊ သင်က နေ့စဉ်လုပ်ငန်းတွေ ဖော်ပြတယ်။ ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်မှာ မေးခွန်းကို နှစ်ကြိမ်ဖတ်ပါ — မေးခွန်းထဲက keyword တစ်ခု ပထမဝါကျမှာ ပါရမယ်။
- No example — only general claims. “It is good. It is important. It is useful.” fills 90 seconds with nothing. One concrete example is worth more than all three claims combined.ဥပမာမပါဘဲ ယေဘုယျအဆိုပြုချက်တွေချည်း။ “It is good. It is important. - Trailing off with no close. “So… yeah…” as the timer dies. Decide your closing line during planning — a weak close erases a strong middle.အပိတ်မပါဘဲ မှုန်ဝါးရပ်သွားတာ။ Timer ကုန်ခါနီးမှာ “So… yeah…”။ စီစဉ်ချိန်မှာ အပိတ်စာကြောင်း ဆုံးဖြတ်ထားပါ — အပိတ်အားနည်းရင် အလယ်ပိုင်းကောင်းတာပါ ပျက်တယ်။
- A memorized script that doesn’t fit. Reciting a pre-memorized paragraph about “my hometown” when asked about technology. The AI — and any listener — hears the mismatch instantly.မေးခွန်းနဲ့ မကိုက်တဲ့ အလွတ်ကျက်စာသား။ နည်းပညာမေးတာကို “my hometown” အကြောင်း အလွတ်ကျက်ထားတာ ရွတ်ပြတာ။ AI ကော နားထောင်သူပါ မကိုက်တာကို ချက်ချင်းကြားတယ်။

Is Read, Then Speak still on the test in 2026?2026 မှာ Read, Then Speak စာမေးပွဲမှာ ရှိနေတုန်းလား?
Yes — it is still current. The July 2025 update removed Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak (replaced by Interactive Speaking), but Read, Then Speak was not removed. Many guides list it as gone by mistake.
ဟုတ်ပါတယ် — ရှိနေတုန်းပါ။ July 2025 update မှာ Read Aloud နဲ့ Listen, Then Speak ကို ဖြုတ်ပြီး (Interactive Speaking က အစားထိုးတယ်) ပေမယ့် Read, Then Speak ကို မဖြုတ်ပါ။ လမ်းညွှန်တော်တော်များများက မှားပြီး ပျောက်ပြီလို့ ရေးထားကြတယ်။
How is it different from the Speaking Sample?Speaking Sample နဲ့ ဘာကွာလဲ?
Read, Then Speak is a scored 90-second item in the adaptive test. The Speaking Sample is a separate unscored 1–3 minute video at the end of the test, sent to universities. Different tasks, different stakes.
Can I write notes during the 20-second preview?စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်မှာ မှတ်စုရေးလို့ရလား?
No — the DET does not allow writing materials or paper notes during the test. Plan mentally: pick 3 keywords in your head and hold them.
မရပါ — DET စာမေးပွဲမှာ ရေးစရာပစ္စည်း ဒါမှမဟုတ် စာရွက်မှတ်စု ခွင့်မပြုပါ။ စိတ်ထဲကနေ စီစဉ်ပါ: keyword ၃ ခုကို ခေါင်းထဲရွေးပြီး မှတ်ထားပါ။
Is it scored by a human or by AI?လူက အမှတ်ပေးတာလား AI က အမှတ်ပေးတာလား?
By AI — it is a scored item in the adaptive test and feeds your Speaking subscore. Duolingo does not publish the full rubric weights, but coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency all matter.
What if I misunderstand the prompt?မေးခွန်းကို လွဲမှားနားလည်မိရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမလဲ?
Answer the part you understood — a confident partial answer outscores freezing. Never sit silent hoping the prompt will make sense later; it won’t.
နားလည်တဲ့အပိုင်းကို ဖြေပါ — ယုံကြည်မှုရှိတဲ့ တစိတ်တပိုင်းအဖြေက ရပ်နေတာထက် အမှတ်ပိုရပါတယ်။ မေးခွန်း နောက်မှ သဘောပေါက်မယ်လို့ မျှော်ပြီး တိတ်တိတ်မနေပါနဲ့။
