Speak About the Photo — Duolingo English Test (2026 Guide + Practice)Speak About the Photo — Duolingo English Test (2026 လမ်းညွှန် + လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများ)
Speak About the Photo is the Duolingo English Test’s picture-description task: you see one photo, get 20 seconds to preview it, then describe it aloud for up to 90 seconds — and recording starts automatically. It is the longest single speaking turn on the test, and it feeds your Speaking subscore. This lesson gives you the 10–60–20 framework plus four practice photos with model answers.
Speak About the Photo
How It Works — Step by Stepဘယ်လိုဖြေရမလဲ — အဆင့်ဆင့်
- 20-second preview. The photo appears on screen. Recording has not started yet — scan the photo quickly and lock in 3 detail clusters you will describe.စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်။ ဓာတ်ပုံက screen ပေါ်မှာ ပေါ်လာပါတယ်။ Recording မစသေးပါ — ဓာတ်ပုံကို အမြန်လေ့လာပြီး ဖော်ပြမယ့် အစုအဖွဲ့ ၃ ခု ကြိုရွေးထားပါ။
- Recording starts automatically. There is no record button — when the preview ends, the microphone is live. Silence from this point is recorded silence.Recording က အလိုအလျောက် စပါတယ်။ Record ခလုတ် မရှိပါ — ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်ကုန်တာနဲ့ microphone ပွင့်ပါပြီ။ ဒီကနေစပြီး တိတ်ဆိတ်နေရင်လည်း record ဖြစ်နေပါတယ်။
- Describe the photo aloud for up to 90 seconds. Say what you see in detail — objects, people, actions, colors, positions, and the overall feeling of the scene.၉၀ စက္ကန့်အထိ ဓာတ်ပုံကို အသံနဲ့ ဖော်ပြပါ။ မြင်ရတာကို အသေးစိတ် ပြောပါ — အရာဝတ္ထုတွေ၊ လူတွေ၊ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တွေ၊ အရောင်တွေ၊ တည်နေရာတွေ၊ မြင်ကွင်းရဲ့ ခံစားချက်တွေ။
- Minimum 30 seconds — but use the full 90. You must speak for at least 30 seconds; strong responses fill the whole 90 seconds.အနည်းဆုံး စက္ကန့် ၃၀ — ဒါပေမဲ့ ၉၀ လုံး သုံးပါ။ အနည်းဆုံး စက္ကန့် ၃၀ ပြောရပါမယ်။ အမှတ်ကောင်းရတဲ့ အဖြေတွေက ၉၀ စက္ကန့်လုံး ဖြည့်ပြောပါတယ်။
- One item on the test. Speak About the Photo appears once per test and feeds your Speaking subscore.စာမေးပွဲမှာ တစ်ပုဒ်ပါ။ Speak About the Photo က တစ်ကြိမ်ပေါ်ပြီး Speaking subscore ကို သက်ရောက်ပါတယ်။

How It’s Scored (What the AI Listens For)အမှတ်ဘယ်လိုပေးလဲ (AI က ဘာတွေနားထောင်လဲ)
Duolingo does not publish its full scoring rubric, but its scoring guide confirms the automated system assesses your speaking proficiency across several dimensions. For this task, strong responses show:
- Fluency across 90 seconds — smooth, continuous description with no long silences and no drying up at 40 seconds.၉၀ စက္ကန့်လုံး ချောမွေ့မှု — ကြာကြာတိတ်ဆိတ်တာမရှိ၊ စက္ကန့် ၄၀ မှာ ပြောစရာကုန်သွားတာမရှိဘဲ ဆက်တိုက်ဖော်ပြနိုင်တာ။
- Descriptive vocabulary — precise nouns and adjectives, plus spatial words: in the foreground, on the left, in the background.ဖော်ပြတဲ့ စကားလုံးကြွယ်ဝမှု — တိကျတဲ့ နာမ်နဲ့ နာမဝိသေသနတွေ၊ နေရာပြစကားလုံးတွေ (in the foreground, on the left, in the background)။
- Grammar — full sentences with correct tenses; present continuous for actions frozen in the photo (“is arranging”, “are walking”).သဒ္ဒါ — ဝါကျအပြည့်အစုံ၊ tense မှန်ကန်မှု။ ဓာတ်ပုံထဲက လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တွေအတွက် present continuous (“is arranging”, “are walking”)။
- Pronunciation & intelligibility — clear and easy to follow. Your accent does not lower your score — unclear articulation does.အသံထွက် ရှင်းလင်းမှု — လိုက်နားထောင်လို့ လွယ်တာ။ accent ရှိတာက အမှတ်မလျှော့ပါ — မပီမသပြောတာကသာ အမှတ်လျှော့စေတာ။
Honest note: no prep site (including this one) knows the exact algorithm weights. Anyone promising a “guaranteed scoring formula” is guessing. What works is genuinely better speaking — which is what these drills build.
Strategy — 6 Tactics That Workနည်းဗျူဟာ — ထိရောက်တဲ့ နည်း ၆ ခု
- Scan like a camera in the 20 seconds. Sweep the corners — people, actions, foreground, background — and lock in 3 detail clusters before recording starts.စက္ကန့် ၂၀ မှာ ကင်မရာလို လှည့်ကြည့်ပါ။ ထောင့်တွေကို အမြန်ဖြတ်ကြည့်ပါ — လူတွေ၊ လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တွေ၊ အရှေ့ပိုင်း၊ နောက်ခံပိုင်း — recording မစခင် အစုအဖွဲ့ ၃ ခု သေချာရွေးထားပါ။
- Use the 10–60–20 framework: big-picture overview (10s) → details in clusters (60s) → your impression (20s). This structure alone prevents running dry.၁၀–၆၀–၂၀ အစီအစဉ်ကို သုံးပါ: ခြုံငုံအမြင် (၁၀ စက္ကန့်) → အစုအဖွဲ့လိုက် အသေးစိတ် (စက္ကန့် ၆၀) → သင့်ခံစားချက် (စက္ကန့် ၂၀)။ ဒီအစီအစဉ်တစ်ခုတည်းနဲ့ ပြောစရာကုန်တာ ကာကွယ်ပြီးသား။
- Open with a confident overview sentence. “This photo shows…” beats “Um, I can see…” every time. Your first sentence sets the tone.ယုံကြည်မှုရှိတဲ့ ခြုံငုံဝါကျနဲ့ စပါ။ “This photo shows…” ဆိုတာက “Um, I can see…” ထက် အမြဲသာပါတယ်။ ပထမဝါကျက လေသံကို သတ်မှတ်ပေးပါတယ်။
- Move in clusters with signposts. “In the foreground…”, “On the left…”, “In the background…” — organized movement sounds fluent; random jumping sounds lost.လမ်းညွှန်စကားလုံးတွေနဲ့ အစုအဖွဲ့လိုက် ရွှေ့ပြောပါ။ “In the foreground…”, “On the left…”, “In the background…” — စနစ်တကျရွှေ့ပြောတာက ချောမွေ့တယ်လို့ ကြားရပြီး ဟိုခုန်ဒီခုန်ပြောတာက လမ်းပျောက်နေသလို ကြားရပါတယ်။
- Use present continuous for actions. Photos freeze a moment in progress: “is arranging”, “are walking”, “is smiling”. It sounds natural and shows grammar range.လုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တွေအတွက် present continuous သုံးပါ။ ဓာတ်ပုံက လုပ်ဆောင်နေဆဲ အခိုက်အတန့်ကို ဖမ်းထားတာ: “is arranging”, “are walking”, “is smiling”။ သဘာဝကျပြီး သဒ္ဒါကျွမ်းကျင်မှုလည်း ပြသပါတယ်။
- If you run dry, switch to impression. “It looks lively…”, “It reminds me of…” — feelings and memories are still description, and they fill the final 20 seconds beautifully.ပြောစရာကုန်ရင် ခံစားချက်ဘက် လှည့်ပါ။ “It looks lively…”, “It reminds me of…” — ခံစားချက်နဲ့ အမှတ်တရတွေကလည်း ဖော်ပြချက်ပါပဲ၊ နောက်ဆုံး စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ကို လှလှပပ ဖြည့်ပေးပါတယ်။

“This photo shows a busy street market on a sunny morning. In the foreground, there are several stalls covered with colorful fruits and vegetables — I can see oranges, bananas, and leafy greens piled high. On the left, a vendor in a blue shirt is arranging produce while talking to a customer. In the middle of the scene, shoppers are walking between the stalls, some carrying baskets and plastic bags. A woman in a traditional longyi is examining tomatoes at one stall. In the background, more stalls stretch down the street, and a few motorbikes are parked along the side. The whole scene looks lively and a bit chaotic, but in a warm, friendly way. It reminds me of morning markets in Myanmar — noisy, colorful, and full of life. Overall, it’s a vivid snapshot of everyday street commerce.”
Teaching notes: count the clusters — foreground → left → middle → background → impression (the full 10–60–20). Spatial signposts keep the listener oriented. Present continuous (“is arranging”, “are walking”) for frozen actions. The personal link (“reminds me of morning markets in Myanmar”) fills the final 20 seconds naturally. ~90 seconds at natural pace.

“This is a cheerful outdoor scene of a family picnic in a park. In the center of the photo, a red-and-white checkered blanket is spread on the green grass, covered with food — I can see baskets, plastic containers, and bottles of water. Around the blanket, several family members are sitting and chatting; an older woman appears to be serving food to a small child. On the right side, two children are playing with a ball near some tall trees. In the background, the park stretches out with more trees and a few other picnickers in the distance. The sunlight is bright, and everyone looks relaxed and happy. The atmosphere feels warm and peaceful — the kind of simple weekend joy that matters most. It reminds me of holidays when my own family gathers outdoors. Overall, the photo captures a perfect moment of family togetherness.”
Teaching notes: movement goes center → around → right → background → impression. “Appears to be” is gold for details you’re not sure about — guessing gracefully beats freezing. Emotion vocabulary (“cheerful”, “relaxed”, “peaceful”, “togetherness”) lifts a simple scene into a rich description. ~90 seconds at natural pace.

Key phrases to use: “The first thing I notice is…”, “In the distance…”, “It gives the impression of…”

✅ Self-Check Checklist✅ ကိုယ်တိုင်စစ်တဲ့ စာရင်း
✅ Self-check checklist — after every 90-second attempt, ask:✅ ကိုယ်တိုင်စစ်တဲ့ စာရင်း — ၉၀ စက္ကန့်ပြောတိုင်း ပြီးရင် မေးပါ:
- Did I speak for the full 90 seconds (never under 30)?၉၀ စက္ကန့်အပြည့် ပြောခဲ့လား (၃၀ အောက် ဘယ်တော့မှ မရောက်ခဲ့လား)?
- Did I open with an overview sentence (“This photo shows…”)?ခြုံငုံဝါကျ (“This photo shows…”) နဲ့ စခဲ့လား?
- Did I describe at least 3 detail clusters with signposts (foreground / left / background)?လမ်းညွှန်စကားလုံးတွေနဲ့ (foreground / left / background) အစုအဖွဲ့ အနည်းဆုံး ၃ ခု ဖော်ပြခဲ့လား?
- Did I use full sentences — not a noun list?ဝါကျအပြည့်အစုံ သုံးခဲ့လား — နာမ်စာရင်း မဟုတ်ခဲ့လား?
- Did I close with an impression (“It looks… / It reminds me of…”)?ခံစားချက် (“It looks… / It reminds me of…”) နဲ့ အပိတ်လုပ်ခဲ့လား?
- Was there any silence longer than 3 seconds?၃ စက္ကန့်ထက် ကြာတဲ့ တိတ်ဆိတ်မှု ရှိခဲ့လား?
🚫 Common Mistakes of Myanmar Learners🚫 မြန်မာကျောင်းသားတွေ အမှားများတဲ့ အချက်များ
- Listing nouns instead of speaking. “Market. People. Fruit.” is not a description — it’s an inventory. Always use full sentences: “There is a busy market. People are buying fruit.”စကားမပြောဘဲ နာမ်တွေ စာရင်းလုပ်ပြတာ။ “Market. People. Fruit.” ဆိုတာ ဖော်ပြချက်မဟုတ်ဘူး — စာရင်းပါ။ ဝါကျအပြည့်အစုံ အမြဲသုံးပါ: “There is a busy market. People are buying fruit.”
- Running dry at 40 seconds, then silence. The classic score-killer. The 10–60–20 framework exists exactly for this — the impression section is your safety net.စက္ကန့် ၄၀ မှာ ပြောစရာကုန်ပြီး တိတ်သွားတာ။ အမှတ်ပျက်စေတဲ့ အဖြစ်အများဆုံးအမှား။ ၁၀–၆၀–၂၀ အစီအစဉ်က ဒီအတွက်ပဲ ရှိတာ — ခံစားချက်အပိုင်းက သင့်အရန်အကူပါ။
- Describing one detail for 60 seconds. The tomato-stall saga: five sentences about one stall while the rest of the photo goes undescribed. Move in clusters — never camp on one spot.အသေးစိတ်တစ်ခုတည်းကို စက္ကန့် ၆၀ ဖော်ပြနေတာ။ ခရမ်းချဉ်သီးဆိုင်အကြောင်း ငါးဝါကျပြောပြီး ကျန်တဲ့ဓာတ်ပုံကို မဖော်ပြတာ။ အစုအဖွဲ့လိုက် ရွှေ့ပြောပါ — တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ မရပ်နေပါနဲ့။
- Freezing at the start. “Um, this photo is…” + 5 seconds of panic. Have your overview sentence ready before recording starts: “This photo shows…”.အစမှာ ကြောင်သွားတာ။ “Um, this photo is…” + ၅ စက္ကန့်ထိတ်လန့်တာ။ Recording မစခင် ခြုံငုံဝါကျ အသင့်ပြင်ထားပါ: “This photo shows…”။
- Speaking too quietly or too fast. Nerves make some learners whisper and others race. The AI needs clear, steady speech — a calm natural pace fills 90 seconds easily.
Frequently Asked Questionsမေးလေ့ရှိတဲ့ မေးခွန်းများ
How many Speak About the Photo items are on the test?စာမေးပွဲမှာ Speak About the Photo ဘယ်နှစ်ပုဒ်ပါလဲ?
Just one. You get a single photo with a 20-second preview and up to 90 seconds of speaking.
တစ်ပုဒ်တည်းပါ။ ဓာတ်ပုံတစ်ပုံကို ကြိုကြည့်ချိန် စက္ကန့် ၂၀ နဲ့ ပြောချိန် ၉၀ စက္ကန့်အထိ ရပါတယ်။
Does recording start by itself?Recording က သူ့အလိုလို စတာလား?
Yes — recording starts automatically when the 20-second preview ends. There is no button to press, so be ready to speak the moment the preview finishes.
ဟုတ်ပါတယ် — ကြိုကြည့်ချိန် စက္ကန့် ၂၀ ကုန်တာနဲ့ recording အလိုအလျောက် စပါတယ်။ နှိပ်ရမယ့်ခလုတ် မရှိလို့ ကြိုကြည့်ချိန်ပြီးတာနဲ့ ပြောဖို့ အသင့်ဖြစ်နေပါ။
What if I finish describing everything at 50 seconds?စက္ကန့် ၅၀ မှာ ဖော်ပြစရာကုန်သွားရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမလဲ?
Keep going — the minimum is 30 seconds but the full 90 is recommended. Switch to your impression: how the scene feels, what it reminds you of, and an overall closing line. Recorded silence scores nothing.
Is it scored by a human or by AI?လူက အမှတ်ပေးတာလား AI က အမှတ်ပေးတာလား?
By AI — it is a scored item in the adaptive test and feeds your Speaking subscore. Duolingo does not publish the full rubric weights, but fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation all matter.
What if I can’t identify something in the photo?ဓာတ်ပုံထဲက အရာတစ်ခုကို မသိရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမလဲ?
Describe what you can see (“a tall metal object”) or guess gracefully: “It looks like…”, “It appears to be…”. Never freeze — an elegant guess always beats silence.
မြင်ရတာကို ဖော်ပြပါ (“a tall metal object”) ဒါမှမဟုတ် သပ်သပ်ရပ်ရပ် ခန့်မှန်းပါ: “It looks like…”, “It appears to be…”။ ဘယ်တော့မှ ရပ်မနေပါနဲ့ — သပ်ရပ်တဲ့ခန့်မှန်းချက်က တိတ်ဆိတ်မှုထက် အမြဲသာပါတယ်။
