Strategies for Extending Your Answers

Strategies for IELTS Speaking Part 1

Your Warm-Up Lap

Welcome to the deep dive into Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test. As we covered in the first lesson, this section is a 4-5 minute "warm-up" where the examiner asks you questions about familiar topics. While it seems simple, it's your first and best chance to make a strong impression.

The single most important skill to demonstrate here is your ability to extend your answers. Short, simple answers won't give the examiner enough language to assess, which can limit your score. This lesson will teach you exactly how to do that naturally and effectively.

What Will They Ask? Common Topics

Work/Studies

Hometown

Hobbies

Family/Friends

Food

The Golden Rule: Use the A.R.E. Method

A simple, powerful way to extend your answers is the A.R.E. method. It gives your answer a clear structure and ensures you provide enough detail.

A

Answer

Give a direct answer to the question.

R

Reason

Explain why. Use "because..." or similar phrases.

E

Example

Give a specific example or add extra detail.

Putting A.R.E. into Practice

Examiner: "What's your hometown like?"

Weak Answer:

"It's nice."

Strong A.R.E. Answer:

[A] My hometown is a bustling coastal city, so it's quite lively. [R] The main reason it's so busy is because it's a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer. [E] For example, the beaches are always packed with people and there are lots of great seafood restaurants along the waterfront.

See It in Action: Another Example

Watching mock tests is one of the best ways to prepare. In this video, notice how the student's answers improve after receiving feedback about adding more detail.
