Listen and Type — Duolingo English Test (2026 Guide + Practice)Listen and Type — Duolingo English Test (2026 လမ်းညွှန် + လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းများ)

Listen and Type is the Duolingo English Test’s dictation task: you hear a spoken statement and type EXACTLY what you hear — every word, every letter, every tiny a and the. You’ll get 6–9 items, one minute each. It looks like the easiest task on the test — but it quietly punishes careless spellers, because plurals, -ed endings, and homophones all count. This lesson gives you the strategy plus 14 full practice dictations with real audio in your browser.

How It Works — Step by Stepဘယ်လိုဖြေရမလဲ — အဆင့်ဆင့်

  1. You hear one spoken statement. A sentence is read aloud — clear, natural pace, about 5–10 seconds long.စာကြောင်းတစ်ကြောင်း အသံနဲ့ ကြားရပါတယ်။ ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းကို ရှင်းရှင်းလင်းလင်း သဘာဝကျတဲ့ အမြန်နှုန်းနဲ့ ဖတ်ပြပါတယ် — ၅–၁၀ စက္ကန့်ခန့် ကြာပါတယ်။
  2. You get 1 minute per item. There are 6–9 items in this section. The minute is generous for typing — the real skill is hearing correctly.တစ်ခုကို ၁ မိနစ် ရပါတယ်။ ဒီအပိုင်းမှာ ၆–၉ ခု ပါပါတယ်။ ရိုက်ဖို့ တစ်မိနစ်ဆိုတာ လုံလောက်ပါတယ် — တကယ့်စွမ်းရည်က မှန်အောင် ကြားနိုင်တာပါ။
  3. Type EXACTLY what you hear. Spelling, word forms, and small words like a and the all count. “The cat sat” and “A cat sat” are different answers.ကြားတဲ့အတိုင်း အတိအကျ ရိုက်ပါ။ စာလုံးပေါင်း၊ စကားလုံးပုံစံတွေ၊ a နဲ့ the လို စကားလုံးသေးသေးလေးတွေပါ အားလုံး အမှတ်ဝင်ပါတယ်။ “The cat sat” နဲ့ “A cat sat” က မတူတဲ့ အဖြေတွေပါ။
  4. You can replay within the minute. Use replays wisely — listen once for meaning, type, then replay once to check the details you missed.တစ်မိနစ်အတွင်း ပြန်နားထောင်လို့ရပါတယ်။ ပြန်နားထောင်တာကို ပညာရှိရှိ သုံးပါ — အဓိပ္ပာယ်သိဖို့ တစ်ကြိမ်နားထောင်၊ ရိုက်၊ ပြီးမှ လွတ်သွားတဲ့ အသေးစိတ်တွေ စစ်ဖို့ တစ်ကြိမ် ပြန်နားထောင်ပါ။
  5. Submit and move on. Don’t spend the full minute polishing — if it matches what you heard, submit and save your energy.Submit လုပ်ပြီး နောက်တစ်ခုဆက်ပါ။ တစ်မိနစ်လုံး ပြင်ဆင်နေစရာ မလိုပါ — ကြားတဲ့အတိုင်း ကိုက်ညီရင် submit လုပ်ပြီး အားအင်ကို ချွေတာထားပါ။

⚠️ Test-day setting that costs real points: turn OFF predictive text and autocorrect on test day, and close browser extensions like Grammarly. The real test runs with AI + human proctoring, and you must type every letter yourself — practice that way too, starting with the dictations below.

Honest note: Duolingo does not publish full rubric weights or per-item point values. Automated items carry partial credit, and Duolingo states you are NOT penalized more for a wrong answer than for skipping — so on the real test, always type your best guess instead of leaving a blank.

Strategy — 6 Tactics That Workနည်းဗျူဟာ — ထိရောက်တဲ့ နည်း ၆ ခု

  1. Listen to the WHOLE sentence first. Don’t start typing at word one — hear the full meaning, then type. Typing too early makes you miss the ending.ဝါကျတစ်ခုလုံး အရင်နားထောင်ပါ။ ပထမစကားလုံးကတည်းက စမရိုက်ပါနဲ့ — အဓိပ္ပာယ်အပြည့်အဝ အရင်ကြား၊ ပြီးမှ ရိုက်ပါ။ စောစောရိုက်တာက နောက်ဆုံးပိုင်းကို လွတ်စေတတ်တယ်။
  2. Use the listen → type → check cycle. First listen: catch the meaning and type the content words (nouns, verbs). Replay: fill in the small words and endings you missed.
  3. Hunt the four classic traps. Every practice sentence below targets one: a/the mix-ups, plural -s, past-tense -ed, and homophones (their/there, weather/whether).ထောင်ချောက်လေးမျိုးကို အထူးသတိထားပါ။ အောက်က လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းတိုင်းမှာ တစ်မျိုးစီ ပါဝင်ပါတယ်: a/the ရောထွေးမှု၊ plural -s၊ past tense -ed၊ အသံတူ စကားလုံးတွေ (their/there, weather/whether)။
  4. Use American spelling. This is a US test — color, theater, center. If you’re unsure between two spellings, the American one is the safe choice.American spelling ကို သုံးပါ။ ဒါက အမေရိကန် စာမေးပွဲပါ — color, theater, center။ စာလုံးပေါင်း နှစ်မျိုးကြား မသေချာရင် American ပုံစံက အန္တရာယ်ကင်းပါတယ်။
  5. Jot shorthand notes on the first listen. You can’t use paper on test day, but in practice, training your ear with shorthand (below) makes you catch small words faster.ပထမအကြိမ်နားထောင်တုန်း အတိုကောက် မှတ်ပါ။ စာမေးပွဲနေ့မှာ စာရွက်သုံးလို့ မရပေမယ့်၊ လေ့ကျင့်တဲ့အခါ အောက်က အတိုကောက်နည်းနဲ့ နားကို လေ့ကျင့်ပေးရင် စကားလုံးသေးသေးလေးတွေ ပိုမြန်မြန် ဖမ်းမိလာပါတယ်။
  6. Never leave it blank. Partial credit means a good guess beats silence. If one word is unclear, type the sentence with your best guess for that word.

📝 Shorthand Note-Taking for Dictation📝 Dictation အတွက် အတိုကောက် မှတ်နည်း

You can’t write on test day — but in practice, shorthand trains your brain to catch words in chunks instead of one painful word at a time. Use these while drilling below:

  • Write content words only, first: nouns + verbs. “She walks to school every day” → she walk school day — then replay and add to, every, and the -s.အဓိကစကားလုံးတွေပဲ အရင်ရေး: noun + verb။ “She walks to school every day” → she walk school day — ပြီးမှ ပြန်နားထောင်ပြီး to, every နဲ့ -s တို့ ဖြည့်ပါ။
  • Abbreviate ruthlessly: because → b/c, with → w/, and → &, at → @, number → #. Drop vowels in long words: manager → mngr.ရက်ရက်စက်စက် အတိုကောက်လုပ်: because → b/c, with → w/, and → &, at → @, number → #။ စကားလုံးရှည်တွေမှာ သရတွေ ဖြုတ်: manager → mngr။
  • Mark what you missed with a “?”: the ? in yangon is hot ? — the question marks tell your ear exactly what to listen for on the replay.လွတ်သွားတာကို “?” နဲ့ အမှတ်အသားလုပ်: the ? in yangon is hot ? — ပြန်နားထောင်တဲ့အခါ ဘာကို နားစွင့်ရမလဲဆိုတာ ? က အတိအကျ ပြောပြပါတယ်။
  • Endings get their own tick: when you hear -ed or plural -s, write a big +d or +s after the word — Myanmar ears are trained to drop final sounds, so make the ending visible.အဆုံးသတ်တွေကို သီးသန့် အမှတ်အသားလုပ်: -ed ဒါမှမဟုတ် plural -s ကြားရင် စကားလုံးနောက်မှာ +d ဒါမှမဟုတ် +s လို့ ကြီးကြီးရေးပါ — မြန်မာနားက အဆုံးသံတွေ လွတ်တတ်တာမို့ အဆုံးသတ်ကို မျက်စိရှေ့မှာ မြင်အောင် လုပ်ပါ။

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: the verb ending (-s) and “every day” — two words, not one.

ထောင်ချောက်: verb အဆုံးသတ် (-s) နဲ့ “every day” — စကားလုံး နှစ်လုံး၊ တစ်လုံးတည်း မဟုတ်ပါ။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“She walks to school every day.”

Why it tricks learners: “walks” needs the -s (she = third person singular), and “every day” (adverb, two words) is not “everyday” (adjective, one word).

ဘာကြောင့် လှည့်စားလဲဆိုတော့: “walks” မှာ -s လိုတယ် (she = third person singular)၊ “every day” (ကြိယာဝိသေသန၊ နှစ်လုံး) က “everyday” (နာမဝိသေသန၊ တစ်လုံး) နဲ့ မတူပါ။

Item 2 — Easyအကြောင်း ၂ — လွယ်တယ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: an irregular plural — it doesn’t end in -s.

ထောင်ချောက်: ပုံမှန်မဟုတ်တဲ့ plural — -s နဲ့ မဆုံးပါ။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“The children are playing in the garden.”

“Children” is already plural — never write “childrens”. And “are playing” (not “is playing”) must agree with it.

“Children” က plural အသင့်ဖြစ်ပြီးသား — “childrens” လို့ ဘယ်တော့မှ မရေးပါနဲ့။ “are playing” (“is playing” မဟုတ်) က သူနဲ့ ကိုက်ညီရမယ်။

Item 3 — Mediumအကြောင်း ၃ — အလယ်အလတ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: the article “a” is quiet but it counts. The verb is irregular — don’t write “buyed”.

ထောင်ချောက်: article “a” က တိုးတိုးလေး ဖြစ်ပေမယ့် အမှတ်ဝင်ပါတယ်။ Verb က ပုံမှန်မဟုတ် — “buyed” လို့ မရေးပါနဲ့။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“He bought a new car last week.”

“Bought” is the past of “buy”. The tiny “a” before “new” is the classic small-word trap — the ear skips it, the scorer doesn’t.

“Bought” က “buy” ရဲ့ past ပုံစံပါ။ “new” ရှေ့က သေးသေးလေး “a” က ဂန္တဝင် စကားလုံးသေးထောင်ချောက်ပါ — နားက ကျော်သွားတတ်ပေမယ့် အမှတ်ပေးသူက မကျော်ပါ။

Item 4 — Mediumအကြောင်း ၄ — အလယ်အလတ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: the -ed ending is soft — listen for it. Use American spelling for the last word.

ထောင်ချောက်: -ed အဆုံးသတ်က ပျော့တယ် — သေချာနားထောင်ပါ။ နောက်ဆုံးစကားလုံးကို American spelling နဲ့ ရေးပါ။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“They watched a movie at the theater.”

“Watched” — the /t/ ending is easy to miss, and “watch” vs “watched” changes the tense. “Theater” (American) not “theatre” (British).

“Watched” — /t/ အဆုံးသံ လွတ်သွားတတ်ပြီး “watch” နဲ့ “watched” က tense ပြောင်းသွားတယ်။ “Theater” (American) သုံးပါ၊ “theatre” (British) မဟုတ်ပါ။

Item 5 — Mediumအကြောင်း ၅ — အလယ်အလတ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: a homophone pair — “weather” vs “whether”. Meaning decides the spelling.

ထောင်ချောက်: အသံတူ စကားလုံးအတွဲ — “weather” နဲ့ “whether”။ အဓိပ္ပာယ်က စာလုံးပေါင်းကို ဆုံးဖြတ်ပါတယ်။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“The weather in Yangon is hot and humid.”

“Weather” (the sky/climate) vs “whether” (if/or not) — same sound, totally different word. The sentence is about climate, so it’s “weather”.

“Weather” (ရာသီဥတု) နဲ့ “whether” (ဟုတ်မဟုတ်) — အသံတူပေမယ့် လုံးဝမတူတဲ့ စကားလုံး။ ဝါကျက ရာသီဥတုအကြောင်းမို့ “weather” ပါ။

Item 6 — Hardအကြောင်း ၆ — ခက်တယ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Two traps: the -ed on “lived” and a homophone — “for” vs “four”.

ထောင်ချောက် နှစ်ခု: “lived” မှာက -ed နဲ့ အသံတူ စကားလုံး — “for” နဲ့ “four”။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“She has lived here for ten years.”

“Has lived” is present perfect — the -ed is quiet but required. “For ten years” (duration) vs “four ten years” (nonsense) — grammar tells you it’s “for”.

“Has lived” က present perfect — -ed က တိုးပေမယ့် မဖြစ်မနေ လိုပါတယ်။ “For ten years” (ကြာချိန်) ဖြစ်ပြီး “four ten years” က အဓိပ္ပာယ်မရှိပါ — သဒ္ဒါက “for” ဖြစ်ကြောင်း ပြောပြပါတယ်။

Item 7 — Hardအကြောင်း ၇ — ခက်တယ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: double letters. One of these words has a doubled consonant — listen carefully.

ထောင်ချောက်: စာလုံးနှစ်ထပ်။ ဒီစကားလုံးတွေထဲက တစ်ခုမှာ ဗျည်းနှစ်ထပ် ပါတယ် — သေချာနားထောင်ပါ။

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“The manager decided to cancel the meeting.”

“Decided” has a double -d- (decide + d). Many learners type “deciced” or “decidid”. Slow down on double letters — they’re invisible to the ear but not to the scorer.

“Decided” မှာ -d- နှစ်ထပ် ပါတယ်။ ကျောင်းသားတော်တော်များများ “deciced” လို့ မှားရေးတတ်တယ်။ စာလုံးနှစ်ထပ်တွေမှာ ဖြည်းဖြည်းချင်း ဂရုစိုက်ပါ — နားနဲ့ မကြားရပေမယ့် အမှတ်ပေးသူက မြင်ပါတယ်။

Item 8 — Hardအကြောင်း ၈ — ခက်တယ်

💡 Hint💡 အကြံပြုချက်

Trap: the famous triple homophone at the start — their / there / they’re. Which one fits?

ထောင်ချောက်: အစမှာပါတဲ့ နာမည်ကြီး အသံတူ သုံးမျိုး — their / there / they’re။ ဘယ်ဟာက ကိုက်ညီလဲ?

Transcript (open after you type)စာသား (ရိုက်ပြီးမှ ဖွင့်ပါ)

“Their flight was delayed because of the storm.”

“Their” (possessive — the flight belongs to them), not “there” (place) or “they’re” (they are). Test: replace with “they are” — “they are flight was delayed” makes no sense, so it’s not “they’re”.

“Their” (ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှု — လေယာဉ်က သူတို့ဟာ)၊ “there” (နေရာ) မဟုတ်သလို “they’re” (they are) လည်း မဟုတ်ပါ။ စမ်းနည်း: “they are” နဲ့ အစားထိုးကြည့် — “they are flight was delayed” က အဓိပ္ပာယ်မရှိတော့ “they’re” မဟုတ်တာ သေချာပါတယ်။

ပုံမှန်မဟုတ် verb ထောင်ချောက်: “chose” က “choose” ရဲ့ past — “choosed” လို့ မရေးပါနဲ့။

🚫 Common Mistakes of Myanmar Learners🚫 မြန်မာကျောင်းသားတွေ အမှားများတဲ့ အချက်များ

  • Typing what you expect, not what you hear. Your brain auto-corrects “their” to “there” or drops the -ed because “it sounds the same to me.” Trust the sounds, not your habits — the scorer only reads letters.
  • Forgetting the tiny words. A, the, to, of feel unimportant in Myanmar (we don’t have articles), so the ear skips them. In English they are full points — train yourself to listen for them with the “?” shorthand above.
  • Dropping final consonants. Myanmar syllables often end in a glottal stop, so English endings like -ed, -s, and final -t/-d are genuinely hard to hear. Exaggerate them in your own speech for a week — your ear will start catching them.
  • Starting to type too early. Typing word-by-word from the first sound means you’re still typing the beginning when the ending plays — and the ending is where the traps live. Whole sentence first, then type.
  • Practicing with autocorrect on. If your phone “fixes” your spelling during practice, you’re training a skill you won’t have on test day. Turn it off now — painful for a week, profitable forever.

Frequently Asked Questionsမေးလေ့ရှိတဲ့ မေးခွန်းများ

How many Listen and Type questions are there, and how much time do I get?Listen and Type မေးခွန်း ဘယ်နှစ်ခုပါပြီး အချိန်ဘယ်လောက်ရလဲ?

You’ll get 6–9 items, with 1 minute per item. That’s plenty of time to listen, type, and replay once to check — rushing is the only way to waste it.

၆–၉ ခု ပါပြီး တစ်ခုကို ၁ မိနစ်စီ ရပါတယ်။ နားထောင်၊ ရိုက်၊ စစ်ဖို့ တစ်ကြိမ် ပြန်နားထောင် — ဒါတွေ လုပ်ဖို့ လုံလောက်ပါတယ်။ အလျင်စလိုလုပ်တာကသာ အချိန်ဖြုန်းတာပါ။

Can I replay the audio?အသံကို ပြန်နားထောင်လို့ရလား?

Yes — you can replay within your minute. The smart pattern is: listen once for the whole meaning and type the content words, then replay once to catch the small words and endings you missed.

Does spelling really matter that much?စာလုံးပေါင်းက တကယ်အရေးကြီးလား?

Yes — this task is scored by exact transcription. Every letter counts: decided vs deciced, their vs there, walked vs walk are all different answers to the computer.

အရေးကြီးပါတယ် — ဒီမေးခွန်းကို အတိအကျ ရိုက်နိုင်မှုနဲ့ အမှတ်ပေးတာပါ။ စာလုံးတိုင်း အရေးပါတယ်: decided နဲ့ deciced၊ their နဲ့ there၊ walked နဲ့ walk တို့က ကွန်ပျူတာအတွက် မတူတဲ့ အဖြေတွေပါ။

Should I use British or American spelling?British spelling လား American spelling လား သုံးရမလဲ?

Use American spelling — this is a US test. Write color, theater, center. When in doubt between two spellings, the American one is the safe choice.

American spelling ကို သုံးပါ — ဒါက အမေရိကန် စာမေးပွဲပါ။ color, theater, center လို့ ရေးပါ။ စာလုံးပေါင်း နှစ်မျိုးကြား မသေချာရင် American ပုံစံက အန္တရာယ်ကင်းပါတယ်။

What if I can’t hear a word clearly?စကားလုံးတစ်လုံး မရှင်းမရှင်း ကြားရရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမလဲ?

Type your best guess — never leave the item blank. Automated items carry partial credit, and Duolingo states a wrong answer is not penalized more than a skip. Grammar often reveals the word: after “a”, a noun or adjective must follow; after “has”, a past participle.
